smelly basement?

why does my basement smell like sewer gas? i have poured water down the floor drain and it still smells. what can i do and what could the problem be?

Answers:

1The drain probably doesn't have a trap to keep smells and gases from coming back up the pipe. That's that "s" shaped piping piece they put in drains, like under your sink. The water stays in it to seal off gassy smells from coming back up through. I don't know how you can fix it, short of having one installed somehow. You can put stuff down it, but the smell's going to keep coming back as long as there's no water seal.
