A Michigan Basement is an "after-market" renovation on an unfinished basement usually with a very low ceiling height, whereas, further excavation, carried out over time by an ambitious homeowner, digs out to a deeper depth, making sure that they stay inside (back) from the original footer/sidewalls. Then, a new concrete floor is poured, and the sidewalls are finished off as well. The result is a basement with an adequate ceiling height (not always to current building code) at minimal cost.
