I need to replace my basement windows. They have the metal frame that was put in with the foundation. It is rusted badly. Is it ok to remove this & install new vinyl window or is the metal frame of any structural significance?

My basement is a poured concrete foundation. I have started removing one of the frames but a neighbor told me that it may be necessary for strength.
