Can my crawspace become a basement? | |
My home is over 100 years old and I would like to excavate the crawspace for more room. Is this possible and what would I need to do?

Hire a structural engineer. Blueprints will be made for you to tender to a foundation contractor. You may either raise the house, which is less expensive, or you may have your crawlspace dug out, underpinned, and a new set of foundation walls poured. This is labour intensive, thus more expensive than having your basement raised. Raising your basement would also allow you to have larger, higher basement windows installed, allowing for significantly more light and air circulation! $25,000.00 is a good starting point to budget for this project. It is NOT a do it yourself job. You do not want to comprimise the structural integrity of your basement.Your whole house is resting on it! Hope I've helped to answer your question.

Would a crawlspace on a lot of land on a high water table prevent the home from getting water?
Also what is a crawlspace? Are there heating and plumbing pipes in a crawlspace?
I would appreciate your info.
Thanks,
Susan
